Desiccants are a group of materials that can efficiently remove water from solids or liquids by either absorbing the moisture, changing its physical state into gas and/or chemically decomposing it. They are mostly used for drying processes in industrial settings like electronics manufacturing plants, food processing facilities, pharmaceutical hubs, etc.

Desiccant can also refer to any substance used to dry out something else; for example, calcium chloride may be referred to as “desiccant salt” when it's being used for this purpose.

Physical Absorption

Physical desiccant products are composed of granules that absorb moisture due to a large surface area which facilitates rapid diffusion through capillary action. As they consist of natural ingredients such as silica gel and clay minerals (among others), there is little risk of chemicals being released into the environment when disposed of properly. These agents come with different functionalities depending on their size - some have high bulk density while others offer low thermal conductivity.

Physical desiccants are used in the electronics industry to protect sensitive electronic components against moisture, as well as for drying purposes across a range of industries including pharmaceutical and food manufacturers. Physical desiccants such as silica gel, zeolite are most commonly used in various applications for their ability to absorb water vapor without the need for any external heat or other chemicals.

Chemical Absorption

Chemical absorption desiccants are a type of desiccant that relies on chemicals to adsorb and remove moisture. The process is generally slow but also removes water molecules from the air or other fluids through chemical reactions. These substances will release stored energy in order to react with the water molecule they’ve absorbed. Chemical absorption can be used for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and pesticide residues left behind by some pesticides during processing because it is thought these contaminants may form harmful gases if not removed. Chemicals such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, and calcium chloride are most commonly used for absorption desiccants.

This type of desiccant is often found in the food industry because it has a low-risk level and can remove moisture without much cost to the company or consumer if any at all, unlike other methods such as freeze-drying which is an expensive process that needs to be done by professionals under controlled conditions. Chemical absorption also works well with large spaces like warehouses where space isn't limited, buildings with many windows will see less efficiency while closed structures will see more efficiency.

Electronics

The application of desiccants in the electronics industry is to maintain a dry, clean environment. It reduces moisture and other forms of contamination; thereby enhancing product reliability. In addition, it improves heat transfer which leads to lower operating temperature and improved power efficiency.

Food Industry

In the food industry, desiccants are commonly used in packaging to prevent mold and spoilage of food. Desiccant packets form a physical barrier between moisture-sensitive products such as cereal or pet food and air which may contain humidity. A common example is silica gel inside an oxygen absorber packet (“oxygen scavenger”) for canned foods.

Pharmaceuticals

In pharmaceuticals, they can be applied to remove water from drugs or stabilize them against humidity. For these applications, equilibrium chemistry is often not required because factors such as temperature changes, pH levels, and concentration do not affect the rate at which adsorbent molecules will interact with a gas molecule (which removes it). Chemical absorption desiccants are used primarily for pharmaceutical applications, in order to prevent the degradation of drugs. They function by absorbing water molecules from the air and releasing them into a solid-state (releasing heat as they do so). This prevents drugs or other substances from being exposed to damp conditions that could cause their structure to break down.

Packing Materials

In packing materials, desiccants are used to remove moisture from the air within packages. This keeps foods such as dried fruit and vegetables free of mold spores that could contaminate them if left unchecked. It also helps keep inessential odors like pet fur or smoke at bay during transport.

Air & Gas drying

Desiccants are used to remove moisture from the air and help dry outgases. They do this by either absorbing or chemically reacting with water vapor present in these substances, which is then transferred to a solid material like silica gel.

On the basis of the region, the global desiccants market is segmented into North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific. In 2016, the North American region occupied a larger market share of the global desiccant demand owing to higher consumption in this region as compared to other regions, and increasing industrialization across various sectors which will lead towards increased usage of chemical absorption-type desiccant products. In 2016, North American accounted for a share of more than 82% of the global demand for desiccants is largely driven by the rapidly evolving electronics industry.
