The Global Cultured Meat Market size is expected to reach USD $6.89 billion by 2028. The market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 17% during the forecast period from 2021-2028 due to rising demand for meat products with fewer calories and lower fat content. The growth in the market can be attributed to factors such as rising rates of vegetarianism and veganism, which have increased the demand for meat substitutes like cultured meats.
Cultured Meat is the result of a biotechnology technique that involves taking stem cells from living animals and growing them in co-culture with animal muscle tissue. The resulting product has been compared to ground beef, chicken, or fish due to its resemblance, taste, and nutritional profile.
Cultured Meat offers significant advantages over traditional livestock production methods such as lower environmental impact (particularly methane emissions), higher efficiency of resource use (fewer feed needs), and reduced risk for foodborne illnesses associated with slaughtering practices. It also provides potential advantages in terms of increased food security by reducing dependence on other protein sources such as soybeans which are currently heavily used throughout global agriculture.
On the basis of Type, the market is segmented into Chicken, Hamburger, Sausages, and Chicken Breast. Other possible cultured meat products include beef steak, lamb chops, or fish fillets. Chicken-type accounts for more than 50% of global demand with hamburger as the second most popular product accounting for approximately 30%. It was mainly driven by factors such as consumers preferring chicken which is considered healthier because of its low-fat content and lower calorie count per gram compared to other types like pork or beef. The growth rate is relatively higher in the MEA region due to the high vegetarian population (>30%) there. Sausages account for less than 15 % of the total market share.
Chicken breast has been successfully grown by adding cells from muscles into nutrient-rich liquids so they grow into strips resembling muscle tissues. After 21 days, these strips were cut up like regular chicken breasts and seasoned with salt before being fried in oil.
Researchers have also successfully grown hamburgers in the lab. The cells that are used to grow meat were taken from a live cow’s shoulder muscle and multiplied by adding nutrients and other chemicals to them so they would turn into muscle tissue. After just two weeks of growth, these artificial muscles resembled ground beef patties which could then be fried up in oil or grilled on a barbecue grill as if it were any other burger patty.
Processed meats can also be cultured at home now too! To make your own sausages you need only three ingredients: salt, water, and spices such as pepper for flavor; some form of animal protein like chicken or pork scraps; natural sugars or vegan sugar substitutes like honey or maple syrup; and a healthy bacteria to kick off the fermentation process.
Cultured meats are gaining popularity in Europe, for example, chicken breast grown from cells without the need for animal slaughter. The cell tissue is washed with nutrients before being fed an amino acid mixture that causes them to grow into muscle tissue after just two days. This meat can be cooked like regular poultry or fried up on a grill as pork chops would be prepared.
On the basis of Application, the market is segmented men ted into Direct Sales and Indirect. Direct sales are more prevalent in North America, Europe, Latin America whereas indirect sales are relatively high in the Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa. The market was primarily driven by direct sales in 2018 while indirect sales are expected to increase over time as cultured meat products become more mainstream among consumers.
On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East & Africa, and the Asia Pacific. North American accounts for a major market share owing to increasing demand from customers on high-quality product quality. Europe is the second-largest regional market for cultured meat with an increasing focus on animal welfare and environmental protection. Latin America has a considerable share in the Asia Pacific owing to growing demand from customers looking after healthy food items.
The Middle East & Africa region witnessed growth at a moderate pace due to less awareness about this product type among consumers, which could be attributed to limited distribution channels of these products in these regions.
