Chlorination of Acetyl Chloride:

Chlorination of acetyl chloride is a chemical process in which the chlorinating agent reacts with Acetyl chloride to form an organochlorine compound, usually identified as trichloroethylene. This reaction involves the addition of Cl- ions into the molecule (-Cl) and leads to the formation of Chlorine of Acetyl Chloride (CAC), also known as chlorine acetate; Dichloctyelene (DC); Dichlorethane (HCFC-152a).

The reaction of acetyl chloride with chlorine is exothermic, and it has a relatively high rate constant for the second step. Thus the process proceeds to completion in less than one minute at room temperature. The product (CAC) is used as an agricultural insecticide; however, its use was discontinued when organochlorine-based pesticides were banned by U.S.-EU regulatory bodies after they had been found to be persistent organic pollutants that bioaccumulate.

 

Oxidation of 1:

Oxidation of ethylene is the process that involves the removal of hydrogen molecules from a molecule. This may be achieved through different means, such as by photolysis or heat. Ethylene reacts with oxygen in nature to produce ethanol and water vapour ethene + O₂ → CO₃+H²O

One of the major uses of oxidation is in its role as a bleaching agent. The goal of this process is to remove the color from substances, and it can be done through various mechanisms such as chlorine or peroxide.

 

1-Dichloroethylene:

The term ’dichloroethylene' is the chemical compound with the formula CCl=CH. This colorless liquid has a sweet odor and is produced primarily as an intermediate in the industrial production of ethylene dichloride, which itself can be used to produce vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) for PVC plastics or other chlorinated hydrocarbons such as tetrachloroethene. It finds niche applications in some solvents, degreasers, and paint removers but its use is declining due to environmental concerns around disposal and emission into the air from factories that manufacture VCM.

The Herbicides segment accounted for the largest market share, in terms of volume. this is mainly due to its wide application across various agricultural crops such as corn, soybean, cotton, and wheat. Moreover, chloroacetyl chloride also finds applications in herbicides that are specially formulated with insecticides or fungicide ingredients.

There is an increased demand for herbicides that are effective against weeds and also have a long residual effect. This has resulted in chloroacetyl chloride being increasingly used as one of the key ingredients for making these pesticides. Moreover, it finds extensive application across various agricultural crops such as corn, soybean, cotton, wheat, etc., which contributes to its high demand among farmers.
