Cement Retarder is an additive to the concrete mix design that controls how quickly or slowly it will set. The desired use of this chemical agent is usually for preventing rapid setting and cracking in cold weather conditions, hence mainly used for commercial structures which are exposed to fluctuating temperatures. Cement retarders can also be used together with Accelerators (e.g., Polycarboxylate Ethers) when dealing with warm-weather concreting - a process called precast slab casting - where too quick curing may cause expansive cracks due to insufficient time for the heat generated by hydration reactions escape from within the cement paste matrix.

These types of retarders offer a more environmentally friendly option for construction workers and builders when compared with inorganic agents, which require hazardous chemicals and other substances. Organic cement inhibitors may be extracted from tree bark or made synthetically, offering architects increased versatility in their use as they can also delay the start time on projects by up to 24 hours before the application is needed.

 

Inorganic Agents:

Inorganic agents are typically water-based and have a non-regenerating property, which is not the case with organic retarders. These inorganic retarders usually react to moisture and heat of the substrate surface rather than from the weather or temperature changes. In addition, they don't require any additional material for manufacturing such as chemicals or additives because these can be mixed into wet cement during production.

 

On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Commercial and Residential. The commercial sector has the highest demand for cement retarders, due to construction activities. The residential segment is a close second, as it requires cement retarding agents during concrete slab installations and foundation work.
