Calcium Hypophosphite is a white, odorless crystalline powder with the chemical formula Ca(HOPO)₃. Calcium hypophosphite was first discovered in 1885 by Ernestus Theodor Richter (1842-1900), who extracted it from rosin and named it "calcareous phosphorous acid." It is insoluble in water but soluble in nonpolar solvents like ethers or oil. Calcium Hypophosphite is most commonly used in electroplate applications, making it a key material for the production of automobiles and aircraft. The low cost of calcium hypophosphite also makes it an attractive substitute to many other phosphates that are more expensive to produce.

Pharmaceutical Grade Calcium Hypophosphite:

Pharmaceutical Grade Calcium Hypophosphite is a chemical reagent that can be used in pharmaceuticals and other applications where purity or compatibility with living cells is important. Calcium Hypophospate is an ingredient for many drugs such as ampicillin, erythromycin, oxytetracycline (OTC), penicillamine, and quinidine. Pharmaceutical-grade calcium hypophosphite replaces the commercial-grade product when a higher purity level is needed for pharmaceutical manufacturing processes because it has lower levels of impurities like sodium chloride that may contribute to drug toxicity or incompatibility with living cells. FDA regulations require the use of either pharmaceutical grade or industrial grade products depending on the process type being performed. The global demand for improved grade calcium hypophosphite is anticipated to show healthy growth during the forecast period.


Industrial Grade Calcium Hypophosphite:

Industrial grade calcium hypophosphite has many uses including as a component of electroplating baths, explosives for mining or quarrying, and the production of phosphate fertilizers. Industrial grades also have used as additives to cement materials to prevent corrosion such as white phosphorous-blended Portland Cement (WPC) that provides protection against chloride penetration from external sources. The industrial product may contain CaO impurities which would result in higher NaCl content found in soil near an application site. This could lead to environmental problems like eutrophication.

Pharmaceutical grade calcium hypophosphite is mainly used in the production of pharmaceuticals as a low-cost filler for drugs such as aspirin to reduce manufacturing costs. In coating applications, it is primarily used as an anti-corrosive agent or rust inhibitor on paints and coatings which results in longer shelf life of products due to a lower degradation rate with time. Industrial grades are typically employed throughout the chemical industry as a pH buffering agent, corrosion inhibitor, or desiccant.
