The Global BioControl Agents Market size is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.4% over the forecast period 2018-2028. The growth can be attributed to the increased adoption of pesticides for agriculture and horticulture applications across various countries.

BioControl Agents are plant protection products that help protect plants against various agricultural pests such as insects, animal, and fungal pathogens. They work to control the population of pest organisms by preventing their development or making it easier for natural enemies to kill them. BioControl agents also provide an alternative option for farmers who want effective chemical treatments but have concerns about environmental safety.

BioControl products are used for a wide variety of crops including cereals and grains, vegetables & fruits, pulses & oils. They can be applied to seeds before they grow or sprayed on plants after harvesting. Some biocontrol agents also provide benefits as soil amendments such as weed suppression and nutrient cycling.

On the basis of Type, the market is segmented into Cereals & Grains, Vegetables & Fruits, Pulses and Oils, Other.

Cereals & Grains:

The cereals and grains segment includes plant-based materials such as wheat, rye, barley, oats, corn as well as non-cereal crops like sunflower seeds. Cereal and grain producers are increasingly applying biocontrol agents to reduce yield loss due to insect damage or contamination from the harmful bacteria called Erwinia tracheiphila that can kill plants quickly because of its ability to withstand drying out in the field. In fact, research suggests these products could be used up to three times more often than they currently are worldwide for this type of protection.

Vegetables & Fruits:

The vegetables and fruits segment includes plant-based materials such as potatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, peppers, and others. These products are typically treated on the surface after harvest with biocontrol agents to control pests that could otherwise infest them during storage or before shipment.

Pulses & Oils:

The pulses and oils segment includes crop types like soybeans, peanuts, sunflower seeds which need protection from insects due to their abundance in oil content. Post-harvest treatments are needed for these crops specifically because they can be highly susceptible to insect damage at this stage of production as well.

Other:

This category includes all other types of plants including fruit trees (almond), grapes vines.

On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into Seed Treatment, On-Field, and Post Harvest.

Seed Treatment:

In this case, biocontrol agents are mainly applied to seeds before planting them in order to control pests that feed on the plants’ roots or damage their leaves by preventing the germination of weeds during crop cultivation. These products can also be used as a protectant against harmful bacteria such as Xanthomonas campestris pv vesicatoria (Xcv), which causes bacterial leaf spot disease in tomatoes and other vegetables like cucumbers, peppers, green beans, cabbages, etc. In 2016 alone seed treatments were accounted for $318 million globally accounting for 16% of total revenue from all application types combined.

On-Field:

In this case, biocontrol agents are sprayed on crops during cultivation to control pests such as aphids. Products used in this application type can be applied either by ground or aerial spraying and include insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and plant growth, regulators. In 2016 On-Field products accounted for $356 million globally accounting for 18% of total revenue from all application types combined.

Post Harvest:

In this case, biocontrol agents are sprayed on crops after harvest to control pests such as citrus fruit flies. In 2016 Post-Harvest products accounted for $314 million globally accounting for 16% of total revenue from all application types combined.

On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. The North American market North American region is expected to dominate the market for biocontrol agents during the forecast period, owing to increasing awareness about food safety among consumers and stringent regulatory norms.

The Asia Pacific regional segment of this global biocontrol agents market will show significant growth in terms of volume due to the rising number of small-scale farming operations such as rice fields or tomato greenhouses employing organic practices. Increasing demand from poultry farms where farmers use antibiotics in the feed is also driving the market growth in this region.

In Europe, animal shelters have started using biological insecticides and fungicides on pet animals that can help reduce resistance against chemical biocides. A rise in greenhouse vegetable production across Europe has led to an increased usage requirement for these products because they are efficient at controlling pests and diseases in the environment.

In Latin America, increasing awareness among growers about biocontrol agents is leading to increased demand. Additionally, a rise in farm size coupled with technological advancements has also led to an increase in the usage of these products for controlling pests and pathogens.
