The Global Automotive Engine Market size is projected to grow from $64.7 billion in 2020 to $XXX.X billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 6%. The key factors driving the growth of the market are increasing demand for improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, rising demand for commercial vehicles & passenger cars globally, and rapid urbanization across emerging economies.
An automotive engine is a device that converts energy into motion. There are many types of engines, and they can be categorized in different ways: for example, by their speed or size. Automobile motor vehicle engines have four main components: the cylinder block with crankshaft turning the piston assembly (the working parts), valves controlling intake and exhaust flow to/from cylinders, ignition system supplying spark to the combustion chamber(s) at exactly the right time—and an external moving mechanism. These parts work together to make the engine more efficient, which means it is able to convert energy into motion in a way that uses fewer resources (fuel) and emits less pollution than many other forms of motorized transportation.
On the basis of Type, the global automotive engine market is segmented into In-line engine, V-type Engine, W-Type Engine, and Horizontal Opposed engine.
An in-line engine is a type of internal combustion engine in which the cylinders are arranged in a single line or plane along the crankcase. The cylinder arrangement typically consists of two parallel inline engines with both pistons driving a common crankshaft. Where it is not feasible to do so (for example high and narrow vehicles), multiple banks may be used connecting rods between all adjacent pairs of cylinders such as the Napier Deltic diesel locomotive. A V12 piston configuration would therefore be an In-Line twelve-cylinder engine - note this does not imply that each piston has its own dedicated camshaft but refers to how they are grouped together around the central crankshaft on one bank - where there could also appear to be more than one camshaft.
The V-type engine is a type of piston engine where two cylinders share the same crankshaft. This configuration gives better balance because both pistons are moving in opposite directions, canceling out any torsional vibration that might occur. These engines have an odd number of bores and strokes per cylinder to give these pistons opposed motions for smoother running at high speeds. The straight-twin layout was also used on some early motorcycles with side valves or sleeve valves engines such as BMW models R32/R37, Zündapp KS550K, DKW RT 125 Weltkrad (1939), MZ ES 150 S&S (1959), and many British Triumphs including T120 Bonneville & TR25W Trophy (1961). Some of these motorcycles were made with an offset crankshaft, which canceled out the primary rocking vibration; others used a 90° V-twin.
The W-type engine is a type of internal combustion piston engine. It has four cylinders, all of which are arranged in a "W" formation. This would be similar to having two inline engines placed back-to-back and sharing a common crankshaft. The W-Type engine is also known as Vertical Opposed Engine. It has two cylinders on both sides of the crankshaft in a "V" shape. They are parallel to each other with an offset angle between 40° and 50°. The Vee or vee-angle produces some serious design challenges, including uneven cooling of the cylinder heads which can lead to warping if not addressed early in development, but it offers good overall balance while keeping reciprocating masses low.
Horizontal Opposed engines are engines that have cylinders arranged horizontally. The direction of movement is parallel to each other, in contrast to an In-Line or V type engine where the pistons travel perpendicular to one another. Horizontally opposed engines generate less noise and vibration than conventional L-type engines because they are mounted with an offset between their crankshaft axis and cylinder banks’ vertical lines. These kinds of vehicles include motorcycles, scooters, mopeds including some sports cars like Porsche Boxster/Singer 911 Carrera S, etc., off-road utility vehicles such as tractors, snowmobiles, etc.
On the basis of Application, the global automotive engine market is segmented into OEM & Aftermarket.
On the basis of Region, the global automotive engine market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa. The automotive engine market in North America is driven by the increasing demand for fuel-efficient and environment-friendly engines such as natural gas, electric, and hybrid engines. In Latin America, the automotive industry is growing rapidly as a result of increasing consumer disposable income and rising vehicle sales. In 2017, the region's overall passenger car sales rose by over four percent to approximately three million cars sold. The total number of commercial vehicles also increased from around 37 thousand in 2010 to more than 70 thousand units in 2016, which was an increase of almost 80%. The automotive engine market in Europe is growing at a healthy rate as the demand for fuel-efficient and low-emission engines have increased. The diesel-powered vehicle segment dominates this region, comprising more than 50% of total passenger car production. According to the report, Asia Pacific is expected to be one of the largest markets in terms of volume and revenue. The region is expected to show high growth rates in the automotive industry, especially in China and India. The automotive engine market is projected to show a positive trend in the Middle East & Africa during the forecast period, as per this report. The region has been experiencing rapid economic growth for the last few years and at present, it’s considered one of the fastest-growing regions globally. During 2010-2020, overall regional vehicle sales are expected to grow by more than 70% with passenger car sales increasing even faster (by 155%). This steady rise in demand for commercial and personal vehicles would significantly boost the overall middle east & African auto parts industry including that of engines which can be attributed to high disposable income among residents, accelerating urbanization rate, and rising consumer spending on luxury products such as cars, etc.
The automotive engine market is primarily driven by the growing demand for lightweight and fuel-efficient engines, increasing government initiatives to reduce pollution from commercial vehicles, a rise in electric passenger cars, and consumer preference for superior performance. In addition, the rising adoption of advanced technologies such as start-stop systems has been a key driver in propelling the growth of this industry.
