The Global Automotive Coupling Market Size is projected to grow from $2.5 billion in 2021 to $3.6 billion by 2028, at an estimated CAGR of 4%. The growth can be largely attributed to higher demand for flexible coupling due to rising fuel prices and stringent emission norms across various countries.

An automotive coupling is a mechanical device that connects two shafts together, typically rotating in opposite directions. Automotive couplings can be classified into rigid and flexible types depending on the flexibility of their use. Rigid types are used for stationary engine drives while flexible types might result in excessive wear and tear if misused or abused.

On the basis of Types, the market is segmented into rigid couplings and flexible couplings.

Rigid Couplings:

Rigid couplings are the most common type of coupling for automotive applications and have been in use since the early 1900s. Rigid types are preferred over flexible ones because they can transfer torque without any slippage or wear to bearing surfaces, which could lead to excessive vibration. In comparison with other types of couplings, rigid couplings offer higher efficiency due to their additional bearings that provide a more smooth transmission.

Flexible Couplings:

Flexible couplings are used mainly in automotive applications for the transmission of power to various machines. Unlike rigid types, flexible ones offer a range of motion that can be adjusted according to machine specifications and requirements. Flexible couplings also require less torque from input shafts than other coupling types which facilitates installation and maintenance procedures as well as reduces energy consumption.

On the basis of Application, the market is segmented into OEM and aftermarket. The OEM segment includes original equipment manufacturers (OEM) who design vehicles with their engines fitted with standard components such as flexibly coupled driveshafts or propeller shafts. In contrast, aftermarket covers replacement parts provided by third-party suppliers usually under warranty conditions for an existing vehicle model.

OEM:

With the rise in environmental concerns, OEMs have been shifting their focus towards designing more fuel-efficient vehicles. Couplings are seen as an indispensable part of this process because they help to increase torque and reduce losses that could otherwise be experienced with a disconnecting coupling system without eliminating gearboxes completely from the design. Some companies, such as Honda Motor Company Ltd., use couplings for both longitudinally-mounted engine applications and transversely mounted transmission driveshafts which helps them achieve better power delivery balance within their transmissions while also improving fuel efficiency through reduced energy loss.

Aftermarket:

Automotive coupling is also being increasingly used by the aftermarket industry which is expected to have a significant growth in sales over the next few years. There has been an increasing trend of the use of couplings rather than other universal joint systems both for heavy-duty vehicles and lightweight passenger cars in order to reduce the chances of overheating. In addition, flexible couplings offer a more durable solution compared with conventional joints that require regular maintenance services such as greasing or replacement; hence they can be the preferred choice among OEMs looking at reducing total cost ownership (TCO). As usage patterns continue to evolve from manual labor-intensive operations towards automated machines, demand for couplings will increase significantly due to their role as one component part within machine assembly processes.

On the basis of Region, the market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East & Africa. The market in North America is expected to dominate over 2020-2028 due to a large number of vehicle manufacturers operating there. In addition, they have access to both abundant natural resources such as coal that are used to produce steel, and sophisticated technology.

The demand in the Asia Pacific is mainly driven by the presence of emerging markets such as China and India with their increasing vehicle sales from the year 2018 to 2028. The high population density coupled with an increase in per capita income has led to a higher demand for passenger cars which will drive automotive coupling market growth prospects in this region.

Growth Factors For The Global Automotive Coupling Market:

The growth factor of the automotive coupling market is the rising demand for passenger cars in developing economies. And increasing vehicle sales will drive up the demand for automobile parts such as couplings which results in a positive impact on the global automotive coupling market size.

Increased production and trade activities among different countries, especially those with high economic activity rates or fast-growing industries are set to increase employment levels and income opportunities leading to an augmented disposable income, boosting car purchasing power over time which will create more business prospects for these manufacturers through increased production capacity utilization. This would result in higher investment returns from major international automakers resulting in continuous improvement in their competitive positioning globally thus propelling this sector's growth outlooks worldwide.
