A transmissive artificial polarizing plate is basically a polarized-light filter, which contains liquid crystal or dichroic dye that can rotate the plane of polarization. This type of product has several applications in the display industry to control the intensity and viewing angle for LCDs. In this, the light travels through one transparent substrate and passes through another transparent substrate which causes polarization effects to occur. It works by taking full advantage of wave interference in addition to reflection and refraction properties that depend on each other when both media are not parallel or perpendicular.

 

 

Reflective:

A reflective polarizing plate is a type of optical filter. It passes light with one direction of polarization and blocks the orthogonal component, it reflects 50% percent of incoming polarized light to pass through which makes it useful in products that require clear images such as LCD monitors, smartphones, or other electronic devices. Reflective artificial polarizing plates are identical to the Transmissive ones but they reflect light rather than allow it to pass through. The main difference between a Reflective and a Transmissive plate is their usage – while transmissive plates can be used as windows or screens, reflective ones cannot do that because of the way they work.

 

 

Semi-Transparent Semi-Reflective:

A semi-transparent semi-reflective artificial polarizing plate is a special type of reflective polarizer that acts as an optical filter. It allows light to be strongly reflected in one direction, while weakly reflecting the orthogonal polarization state. This occurs when the reflection and transmission axes are set at 45° with respect to each other. Semi-transparent semi-reflective artificial polarizing plates have an inorganic thin film on a substrate with an index of refraction difference. They are also called birefringent multilayer optical films (BMOFs) or quarter-wave retarder stacks. The thickness of the layers is increased when increasing the number of reflections to obtain high reflectivity at higher wavelengths and low losses for lower wavelengths, so they can be used as bandpass filters.
